What are the benefits of routine teeth cleaning?
You may do a great job of brushing and flossing your own teeth. So, why do you need to see a dentist every six months? Even the most diligent brushers are not able to get every crevice between teeth. There are simply some spots which are hard to reach. They get missed and bacteria can build up. Once that happens, your teeth become vulnerable to tooth decay and, worse, periodontal disease. Seeing a dentist for routine teeth cleaning eliminates this buildup those hard-to-reach areas while also identifying conditions, like gingivitis and periodontitis, before they become advanced.
How does teeth cleaning work?
Teeth cleaning, on its own, is a simple, pain-free procedure. It has three stages:
Scaling – This procedure removes any tartar and spots of calculus buildup. If there are only a few small areas that need scaling, the hygienist often uses a manual scaler. An ultrasonic scaler is also an option, generally used in more severe cases. It uses a gentle vibration along with a stream of water to break up and wash away tartar.
Polishing – This step removes minor surface staining. It smooths out the surface of the teeth, making it more difficult for plaque and bacteria to take hold. A handheld tool spins a rubber tip and rubs the enamel of the teeth with a cleaning paste.
Fluoride – A fluoride treatment generally follows most teeth cleaning procedures. This natural mineral element strengthens enamel, making it more resistant to acids that can lead to tooth decay.

We understand that a trip to the dentist can be anxiety-inducing for some people. Teeth cleaning is a very gentle procedure. When it is done on a regular, bi-annual basis, the cleaning protects your teeth and gums from conditions that could worsen over time and require the patient to undergo a less comfortable form of treatment.
